1. all but 几乎;除了...都
（1）She all but fainted when she heard the news. 听到那消息,她差点晕过去。
（2）I knew them all but one. 除了一个我不认识之外,其余的人我都认识。

（1）nothing but 没什么···除了
I eat nothing but an egg.我什么都没吃，除了一个蛋。
（2）nothing but 任何东西除了
I can eat anything but eggs. 我什么都可以吃，除了蛋。
（3）everthing but 跟 anything but 不同的是 everthing 通常指大方面的东西，而 anything 通常指一个或一小部分东西。
（4）someting but 跟 anything but 也很像，不过是局限一部分。比如：I can eat something but···有些东西我可以吃除了···因为有些可以吃所以不能吃的东西有很多，but后面要接很多东西。
（5）all but 跟 everthing but 一样。all 比较口语化，everthing 比较正式。
2. now and then 时而,偶尔
（1）I like to smoke a big cigar every now and then. 我喜欢不时地抽一支大雪茄。
（2）I see him every now and then, but not often. 我偶尔看见他, 但不经常看见他。

（2）I am off duty today.今天我歇班。
