Show Me the Money!

Education and wealth, are these two things synonymous? For a long time we have been told that going to university and getting a degree will ensure a financially stable future. However, some universities appear to generate a higher level of monetary wealth in their alumni than others. Tsinghua University has been dubbed “The Cradle of Billionaires” due to the number of graduates that have gone on to become independently wealthy, with 84 of the country’s super-rich having studied there.

A recent survey ranked Chinese universities based on the number of “prominent alumni,” including billionaires, political leaders and scientific elites. The survey’s results appear to indicate that success and wealth are one in the same as the list doesn’t show alumni that have gone on to make great charitable contributions, or simply made enough money in their chosen profession to take care of their family, which I think makes most people a success in the eyes of their parents.

Education columnist and professor at Renmin University of China, Zhang Ming, said the list demonstrates current trends in society. “We are in an era in which people’s greatest pursuit is wealth,” he said. Zhang also went on to say that teaching and encouraging people to be rich shouldn’t be the first priority. Universities still need to improve their foremost mission: cultivating students’ ability for innovation and for scientific research.

If a student finishes university and goes on to start up his or her own company and becomes a billionaire, should this reflect on the university? Does it mean that the teaching at that particular university is any better than anywhere else? I’m not convinced. It’s possible that universities like Tsinghua just attract high-caliber students. After all, Steve Jobs dropped out of Reed College and that doesn’t mean the university doesn’t continue to offer a high quality education to its students.

From a street cleaner to the president, we are all cogs in the machine of society. We all contribute to the greater success, even if, sadly, we are not all billionaires!
