(Text 3)
W: Hi, Leo. Why do you look so happy?

M: No, I need my books.
W: Come on, if we save more money we can retire earlier, and you’ll actually have time to read all those books.
M: Well, what about your clothes? This month, you spent $50 on a T-shirt.
W: Well, you may be right. We can both cut corners. OK, I won’t buy any more clothes unless I really need something.

W: You are Billy’s father, aren’t you?
M: Yes, I am. He brought a note home saying that you wanted to see me.
W: Sorry for all the trouble, but I’m worried about Billy’s school work.
M: Oh? Did he not do his homework again?
W: No, he did it. But I think he needs to work harder. He just has to do better work or he’ll have to stay in Junior Two next year while his friends go on to Junior Three.
M: That wouldn’t be good. I don’t quite understand this. His brother in Senior Two has never had any trouble.
W: Let me show you some of Billy’s work. His math and physics work is fine and his biology is very good. But look at his English and Chinese work.
M: The scores are very low, aren’t they? Here’s a 45 and a couple of 50s.
W: Yes. His average is only 56. That’s the lowest in his class.
M: Hmm, it’s going to take some effort on his part now to keep up with his classmates. Thank you very much for letting me know. I’ll see what I can do at home to help him.
W: You’re welcome. I hope we can both help him improve.
(Text 10)
All over the world, mention of English education suggests a picture of “public schools”, in particular certain very famous institutions—Eton, Oxford and Cambridge. However, people do not always realize what place these institutions occupy in the whole educational system.
Oxford and Cambridge are universities, each having about 12,000 students out of a total of over 25,000 students attending all British universities. Eton is a public school, and the best known of the public schools, which, in spite of their names, are not really public at all, but independent and private secondary schools taking boys and girls from the age of thirteen to eighteen years. The public schools in reality form a very small part of the whole system of secondary education; only about one out of forty English boys and girls goes to a public school, and one out of 1,500 goes to Eton.

Welcome to our school. I am honored to show you around. The area around the school gate is for entertainment. We play basketball and relax there. To the north of the square is the teaching building surrounded by the botanic garden, which has a great collection of valuable plants. Opposite the teaching building, on the other side of the road, is the playground, where we hold the weekly flag-raising ceremony. Going straight on, we can see a dining hall, which provides nutritious meals for us. At the end of the road are the student apartments. They are always clean and tidy and we feel as if we were at home.

31. B。第一空为固定短语take the place of;第二空泛指给别人留下一个更好的印象,故选B项。
