When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.
Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
One evening, Bob was cycling home after a tennis game. It was getting dark and there was no moon in the sky. He was in a hurry to get home. He took a short cut through some back lanes and passed his uncle's watch factory.
There was a very big truck outside and the main gate was open. The watchman was not around. Bob got off his bicycle and hid himself behind a big tree. And then he heard heavy footsteps. He saw four men carrying boxes into the truck.
"These watches will give all of us a big surprise for the coming Christmas," one of them said in a low voice. Bob knew at once that they were thieves. He kept still and quiet, but he was a little afraid.
He waited until they went back into the factory to get more watches, then he ran to the truck and let out the air from the four tyres. After that he got his bicycle and rode as quickly as possible to the police station about a kilometer away.
Questions:
11. Where did Bob go after a tennis game one evening?
12. What did Bob see first when he passed a watch factory?
13. How did Bob help to stop the thieves?
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
Can you think of a sentence in which the word "and" appears five times, without any words in between? There is one at the end of this story.
There was once an inn which was called "The Horse and Cart”. It had a sign outside it which had a picture of a horse and cart on it, but the sign was getting very old, so the owner of the inn decided to have a new one made. He went to a painter and asked him to paint one, and to write "The Horse and Cart" on it in large letters.
A few days later, he went to see how the painter was getting on. He liked the picture of the horse and cart very much, but he did not like the writing at all. He said to the painter, "No, no! There's too much space between 'Horse' and 'And' and 'And' and 'Cart'!”
Questions:
14. Why did the owner want to have a new sign?
15. What was the painter asked to do?
16. Why didn’t the owner like the writing?
