In every language there are words that have interesting stories behind them. The word "sandwich", for example, is very common in English. If we want to know the story behind it, we must know something about an Englishman named Sandwich who lived in the 18th century.
Sandwich was rich, but he liked to play cards for money. He often played for 24 hours, and didn't even stop to have his meals. He ordered his servants to bring him some meat and bread and he played while eating. He put the meat between two pieces of bread and he held the food in his left hand while he played with his right hand. People liked Sandwich's idea and began to eat bread and meat in this way.
Questions:
11. When did the Englishman Sandwich live?
12. What did Sandwich like to do?
13. How did Sandwich eat meal while playing cards?
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
A very strict officer was talking to some new soldiers whom he had to train. He had never seen them before, so he began to say, "My name is Stone, and I'm even harder than stone, so do what I tell you or there'll be trouble. Don't try any tricks with me, and then we'll get on well together."
Then he went to each soldier one after another and asked him his name. "Speak loudly, so that everyone can hear you clearly," he said, "and don't forget to call me 'sir'.”
Each soldier told him his name, until he came to the last one. This man kept silent, and so Captain Stone shouted at him, "When I ask you a question, answer it! I’ll ask you again: What's your name, soldier?"
The soldier was very unhappy, but at last he replied, “My name’s Stonebreaker, sir," he said nervously.
Questions:
14. Why did the officer tell his soldiers his name was Stone?
15. Why didn’t the last soldier answer him at first?
16. When did the story take place?

W: Well, no, because she posted it to me from Portsmouth where she lives and she didn't enclose the receipt.
M: So, she didn't buy it here?
W: No, from your branch in Portsmouth, but it's obviously one of yours---the name of your company is on the label.
M: Yes, of course.
W: It's' not a problem, is it? After all, I think my sister bought it from a shop with branches nationwide just in case I wanted to change it.
M: Well, would you like to choose a pullover in your size?
W: Well, the problem is, I've already looked and actually I couldn't find one in my size in this color-and it's the only color I like. So I think that, actually, I would like to have a refund.
M: Certainly, madam, but you will have to take the pullover to the refund cashier on the second floor.
