1. 表示“空气”,作为物质名词 (不可数),通常不与冠词连用。
如:We breathe air. 我们呼吸空气。
Let’s go out and have some fresh air. 我们到外面去呼吸新鲜空气吧。
We should die without air. 没有空气我们就会死。
若特指,则加定冠词。如:The air felt cold. 这里的空气很冷。
The air in the room was bad. 房里的空气不新鲜。
2. 表示“空中”、“天空”,是不可数名词,但通常要与定冠词连用。
如:The air was full of butterflies. 空中飞满了蝴蝶。
There was thunder in the air. 天空中响起了雷声。
3. 表示“神情”、“神态”、“外观”、“气氛”“,通常与不定冠词连用,若特指则用定冠词。
如:He has an air of importance. 他摆出一副煞有介事的神态。

He had the air of a child who was afraid. 他显出小孩受惊的神情。
4. 表示“不自然的态度”、“做作的姿态”,通常用复数,且不用冠词。

5. 注意以下常用短语。如:
(1) on the air 播送,广播。
如:The news will be on the air at 6p. m. 这条新闻将在下午六点播出。
off the air 指“停止广播”。如:The station has gone off the air. 这家之声已停止广播。
(2) by air 乘飞机。
如:He must have arrived by air. 他一定是坐飞机来的。
It’s quicker by air than by train. 乘飞机比坐火车快。
(3) in the air 在空中;(问题等)悬而未决;感到疑虑。
如:Birds fly in the air. 鸟在空中飞。
