Where do you get your music? Do you buy CDs from shops, go to websites and pay for songs, or do you do as most Chinese listeners do and download them for free from one of the many websites available? Most likely it’s the latter; after all, why pay when you can find it for free?

你从哪里取得音乐呢？你会从商店买CD，或在网上为歌曲付费，又或者你像大部分中国听众一样在许多网上可下载的网上下载音乐呢？大部分应该是后者吧，当你可以免费获得的时候为什么要付费呢？

Since the digital music age began, Chinese users have been able to enjoy it free online compared to many countries in the West, where users have to pay for it. In those countries, music producers and online regulation bodies work together to make sure that downloaded songs are paid for. It is possible to find them for free in the West, but it’s a lot more difficult and the file-sharing websites are illegal.

The major labels that make the practice of free downloads illegal in the West have been putting pressure on the Chinese websites to start charging for downloads. A while ago many of these sites relented and said they would begin charging their users starting from June 5th. However, many websites didn’t actually start charging and those that did only charge for music that they deemed high quality; their other content is still available for free.

西方使免费下载成为非法的各大唱片公司已经施压中国网站进行收费下载。前段时间这些网站做了让步，并表示他们将从6月5日起对他们的用户开始收费。然而，很多网站并没有真正实行收费，而那些收费的只是高质量的音乐，其他内容仍然是免费的。

Most companies are reluctant to charge because they fear their users will stop using their sites and turn to their competitors. Maybe there should be some kind of education for people who download free music. When their works were paid for, musicians would be able to make a living from their music and would thus be inclined to spend more time writing songs and creating more original music.

On the other hand, there are some smaller music producers that actually believe that free downloading is beneficial and a good form of promoting some lesser-known artists. Either way you look at it, it’s probably safe to say that there is a long way to go before paying for music catches on in China. There are some advantages to paying and the only negative side is a dent in the wallet. However, people might be more likely to pay for downloading services if the charge is reasonable and justifiable.
