Anti-West Anger Spreads in Muslim World
AU.S.-made film considered to be insulting
to Islam’s Prophet Mohammed had Western embassies
in Muslim countries on high alert
Anti-American protests broke out across the Muslim world after a 14-minute clip
of the unreleased film was posted on YouTube. Google Inc., which owns YouTube, rejected a request by the White House to reconsider its decision to keep online the controversial clip, but the Internet company said it was restricting access to the video in countries including Egypt and Libya (利比亚).
With the protests continuing worldwide, Western diplomatic missions were on edge. The protests were centered mainly on U.S. embassies, but other targets also came under attack, including embassies and other outposts
of Britain, Germany and the United Nations.
Washington has ordered non-essential staff and family members to leave its embassy after the Sudanese (苏丹的) government turned down a U.S. request to send Marines (海军陆战队) to ensure security. Non-essential U.S. personnel have also been withdrawn from Tunisia (突尼斯), and Washington urged U.S. citizens to leave the capital Tunis (突尼斯市) after the embassy there was targeted.
Germany followed the U.S. lead and withdrew some staff from its embassy in Sudan, which was stormed as protests peaked
on September 14.
The violence has led to a number of deaths. At least nine people were killed in protests on September 14 alone. Previously, the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three others were killed in an attack in Benghazi (班加西), the second largest city in Libya.
The U.N. Security Council issued a statement expressing “deep concern” over attacks on diplomatic posts, calling them “unjustifiable
regardless of their motivations.”
U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta (美国国防部长帕内塔) said he hoped the worst of the violence was over but U.S. missions
must remain on guard.
“It would appear that there is some leveling off on the violence that we thought might take place,” he said. “Having said that, these demonstrations
are likely to continue over the next few days, if not longer.”
