Part B Passages
Directions: In Part B, you will hear two short passages, and you will be asked three questions on each of the passages. The passages will be read twice but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.
Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
There is a public library in every town in Britain. There are branch libraries in many villages. Anyone may borrow books, and it costs nothing. In some places you may borrow as many books as you are likely to want, but in others you are limited to a certain number. They are usually novels. Books may be kept for as long as it is reasonable, so there is no difficulty in having all the reading that is needed.
The latest novels are always in great demand, and non-fiction books, for example, books on history, architecture, science, and gardening are also popular.
If the book you want is out, you may ask for it to be kept for you, and if you pay the cost of sending a postcard, the librarian will let you know when the book has been returned and is ready for you.
Most public libraries also have a reading room and a reference library. In the reading room there are tables and desks at which you can sit and read the daily papers and all the important magazines. In the reference library there are encyclopedias, dictionaries and numerous other books. They many not be taken away.
Question:
11. How much do you pay to borrow books from a public library in Britain?
12. What books are the most popular with people?
13. What would you expect to find in a reference library?
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
Some countries have large numbers of earthquakes. Japan is one of them. Others do not have many. For example, there are few earthquakes in Britain. There is often a great noise during an earthquake. The ground shakes. Houses fall down. Railway lines are broken. Trains run off the lines. Sometimes thousands of people are killed in different ways. About 60,000 were killed in 1783 in South Italy. Krakatau is an island in Indonesia. The volcano in Krakatau caused a terrible earthquake in 1883 and 35,000 people were killed.
Earthquakes often happen near volcanoes, but this is not always true. The centers of some are under the sea. The bottom of the sea suddenly moves. The powerful forces inside the earth break the rocks. The coast is shaken and great waves appear. These waves travel long distances and rush over the land when they reach it. They are strong enough to break down houses and other buildings; sometimes they break more buildings than the earthquake itself.
Questions:
14. Which of the following countries has few earthquakes?
15. What sometimes causes more damage to the building along the coast than the earthquake does?
16. What causes the railway lines to break?

M: You remember Herbert? He was my chemistry teacher.
W: Oh, yes. I met him at the party at your place. I thought he moved to Alaska.
M: He came back. He said Alaska was too cold.
W: I agree with him. I was in Alaska on vacation once, and it was freezing. What’s he doing here now? Is he teaching again?
M: No, he opened his own private business.
