M:A science book says,when lightning quickly beats the air,it will cause thunder.
W:I guess you didn’t read the whole article because the book also says if the lightning is very high in the sky,you might not see that.

W:I wouldn’t miss it for the world! It’s sure to be fun.She’s invited a lot of friends.Do you think everyone will be able to get into her house?
M:If everyone turned up, it would be very crowded.But a few said that they couldn’t go, so I think it should be OK.
W:Are you taking anything?
M:I’ve got her a birthday present and I’ll take a bottle of wine too.
W:That’s a good idea.She has bought plenty of food and drinks.It’s going to be a noisy party.I hope her neighbours don’t mind too much.
M:Helen gets on very well with her neighbours．I wouldn’t be surprised if they went to the party too.

M:Nothing.(louder)I said that I was going to Chicago,in America.
W:I know where Chicago is.When do you leave?
M:Oh 5th May.The course will start the next day,6th May.
W:You’re feeling sick today?Have you seen a doctor?
M:No,I’m not sick.(louder)I said that the course would start on May 6th.The course ends two weeks later on May 20th.
W:How many other young people are going on this course?
M:24.
W:I’m sure there are plenty more,but how many?
M:(louder)I said 24,Granny.
W:I see.What will you have to take?
M:I’ll have to take lots of warm clothing.
W:Nothing?You have to take nothing?What about clothes?
M:(shouting)I said that I would have to take warm clothing!It’s cold there!
W:If you’re cold,put the heater on.There’s no need to shout.I’m not deaf!

W:I think I will make some steaks for dinner.
M:Then we have to buy some steaks.Don’t you think it’s a little bit expensive?
W:It is a little expensive but it’s cheaper than having steaks in a restaurant.
M:What a good wife!
W:Do you want to buy some beer for Mr Chen?
M:Yes,of course!We all like beer,but I think this time we’d better have some table wine,don’t you?
W:Yes,you are right.We do need table wine for the steaks.
M:I think I would prefer the California Rose.
W:That’s good for steaks.What else do you want to buy?
M:A carton of cigarettes.
W:Oh,my God!Why do you want to smoke so much?
M:No,it’s not for me.It’s for Mr Chen and his friends tonight.
W:That makes me feel better but anyway cigarettes are terrible for health.
M:I know.I’m quitting them.
W:Don’t you think we should buy some vegetables and ice cream for dessert?
M:That’s good.Let’s go now.
W:OK.
To the firemen’s surprise,dropping a spoon may have saved Joy Horton’s life.The 73-year-old woman has been living alone.She was preparing some food in her western New York home on Lake Ontario on Monday morning.As she was washing something near the kitchen sink,the spoon she washed happened to drop onto the floor of her kitchen,so she bent down to pick it up.Just then her house exploded.
The explosion destroyed her home in the Wayne County town of western New York.Everything in the house was badly damaged,but Joy Horton wasn’t seriously injured.She crawled out from underneath the broken bricks and walked to her daughter’s home nearby to get help.
Fire officials said no people were injured besides Joy Horton in the explosion.Because Horton was bending down when the explosion happened,the kitchen sink and counter top helped keep the broken things from hitting her.Horton had only small injuries.The police haven’t found out what caused the explosion.They’re still looking into the cause.
