(Text 1)

M:Do you have a seat for the concert tomorrow?

W:I’m afraid there are no seats now,but we sell standing-room tickets two hours before the performance.

(Text 2)

W: You still have an hour to wait,so relax.

M:Relax! How can I when I’m so anxious about the examination?

(Text 3)

M: What do you think of today’s TV programs,Cathy?

W:Well,if you ask me,they’re terrible. Most of the programs are a complete waste of time.

(Text 4)

W:Henry, you are wanted on the phone.

M:Me?Coming!Who would be calling me at work?

(Text 5)

M:Hello,Mary, this is John Smith from the bank,is Paul there?

W:Not yet,John. He phoned me from the office 5 minutes ago to say that he was going to look for a birthday present on his way home.

(Text 6)

W:Good afternoon.I’d like some information about the trains, please.

M:Yes,madam.Which train? Where are you going?

W:To Bournemouth.You see,I have a sister there and...

M:So your question is “When’s the next train to Bournemouth?” Is that right?

W:Yes,that’s right.

M:At half past four.That’ s in about a minute.

W:Thank you.Oh! Which platform does it leave from?

M:Platform 13.

W:Platform 13! Oh,dear! I never travel on trains that leave on Platform 13! 13 is an unlucky number. When’s the next train after the 4:30?

(Text 7)

W: You look rather pale,Mr.Williams.Aren’t you feeling well?

M:It’s nothing serious actually.I was sick most of the night.I didn’t sleep very well.

W:What seems to be the matter? Is it the flu?

M:No,I think it’s something I ate.We ate at that new restaurant last night, and I must have eaten something that didn’t agree with me.

W:Was it that new restaurant over on Fourth Street? Opened only two weeks ago?

M:As a matter of fact,it was.Why do you ask?

W:Because Jerry ate there last week and had the same kind of problem. He was sick the next day, too.

M:That’s interesting.Maybe the health authorities should look into the matter.

W:That’s what I think. Two people with similar problems in such a short time can’t just be coincidence!

(Text 8)

W:Hello. Is that Mr.Nelson? This is Linda speaking.

M:Hello,Miss Linda.What can I do for you?

W:I’m on my way to visit you now,but I’ve lost my way.

M:That’s too bad.Where are you now,Miss Linda?

W:I don’t know exactly.I think I’ m somewhere on New Hampshire Street.I’ m calling you from a bookstore.

M:A bookstore on New Hampshire Street. It’s at a corner, isn’t it?

W:Yes,it is.And I can see a restaurant at the other corner.

M:Now I’ m almost sure where you are.You turned at the second corner. You should have turned at the first corner from the railway station.

W:Is that so? Then I’ ll go back to the first corner.

M:It’ll be better that way. You’ll find a one-way traffic sign. That’s where you have to turn to the left.Come up the slope to reach a six-storied apartment house. My room is on the third floor.

W:I’ m sure I won’ t have any trouble this time.Thanks.

M:I’ll be waiting for you.Bye.

(Text 9)

W: I like that picture you put up on the wall yesterday.

M:Thank you. It’s a photo that I took on my vacation last year.

W:You took it yourself?

M:I’ve been taking pictures for years.

W:Sounds interesting. Can I see some more of your pictures?

M:Yes,certainly. Some of them are just faces of people who interest me.

W:Do you let them know that you’re taking pictures of them?

M:I try not to.I like people who are going about their business without knowing the camera is there.

W:I suppose you need a lot of equipment.

M:Well,I have a dozen cameras, but I use two of them more than the others.

(Text 10)

When the Americans were getting ready to send their first men to the moon,an old Irishman was watching them on TV in the bar of a hotel. There was an Englishman in the bar, too, and he said to the Irishman,“The Americans are very clever, aren’t they? They are going to send some men to the moon. It’s a very long way away from our world.” “Oh,that’s nothing,” the Irishman answered quickly.“The Irish are going to send some men to the sun in a few months’ time. That’s much farther away than the moon, you know.” The Englishman was very surprised when he heard this.“Oh,yes,it is,”he said.“But the sun’s too hot for people to go to.” The Irishman laughed and answered,“Well, the Irishmen aren’t stupid, you know.We won’t go to the sun during the day,of course. We’ll go there during the night.”
