1. every now and then 时而,偶尔
（1）I like to smoke a big cigar every now and then.
我喜欢不时地抽一支大雪茄。
（2）I see him every now and then, but not often.
我偶尔看见他, 但不经常看见他。
2. every other 每隔一个的
（1）The daily housemaid hoovers the carpet every other day.
白天做工的保姆每隔一天用真空吸尘器把地毯弄干净。
（2）We have a slide show every other week.
我们每隔一周观看一次幻灯片。
3. except for 除了...外
（1）The suitcase was light to carry, being empty except for two shirts.
这只箱子提着很轻, 因为里面只有两件衬衣。
（2）The weather was good except for an occasional shower.
除下了一阵大雨外,天气还是很好的。
拓展：except & except for 辨析
except 表示“除去，不包括”，强调所排除的“不包括在内”，一般表示同类之间的关系，常同nothing, all, none, nobody, any 等不定代词以及 every 连用。except 经常接名词或代词，但也可接副词，介词短语，例如：
（1）The office is open every day except Sundays.
除了星期日这家公司每天都营业。
（2）You can have any of the cakes except this one.
除了这块蛋糕，你哪块都能吃。
（3）She saw nothing except snow.
除了雪她什么也没看见。（nothing except = nothing but = only）
except 经常接名词、代词，也可接副词，介词短语，不带 to 的不定式或从句等。例如：
（1）She looked everywhere except here.
除了这里，她到处看。
（2）You may drop in at any time except at noon.
除了中午，你任何时候来都可以。
（3）She doesn’t do anything except sit and watch TV.
除了坐着看电视外，她什么也不做。
（4）It was a good hotel except that it was rather noisy.
这家旅馆还不错，只可惜吵。
（5）He usually goes to work by bicycle except when it rains.
除了下雨的时候，他通常骑自行车去上班。
except for 也表示“除…以外”，指对某种基本情况进行具体的细节方面的修正。它同 except 的区别是：except for 后接的词同句子中的整体词（主语）不是同类的，指从整体中除去一个细节，一个方面；而 except 后接的词同整体词（主语）一般是同类，指在同类的整体中除去一个部分。例如:
（1）I can answer all the questions except for the last one.
除了最后一题外，所有题目我都可以解答。
（2）Your writing is good except for a few grammar mistakes.
除了几处语法错误外，你的作文写得很好。
4. expert at/in/on 善于
（1）The governor was an expert at fencing with reporters.
这位州长是搪塞新闻记者的能手。
（2）This report would be intelligible only to an expert in computing.
只有计算机运算专家才能看懂这份报告。
（3）He was an expert on ancient Chinese astronomical literature.
他是研究中国古代天文学文献的专家。
5. face to face 面对面地
（1）Ever since then I've been longing to meet him face to face.
从那时起,我一直渴望和他面对面地聚会。
（2）I sat face to face with her.
我和她面对面坐着。
